The Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů (1890-1959) took just five weeks to compose this bravura one act opera about the Cretan princess Ariadne, her half-brother Minotaurus and the Athenean hero Theseus. The theme, which exists in many artistic variations, gains a deep psychological dimension in Martinů’s work and is based musically on a diverse range of forms with neoclassical, neo-baroque and impressionistic echoes as well as elements of jazz and folklore.
