DESCRIPTION:When little Max once again rampages through the flat howling like a wolf his mother sends him to bed without any supper. The bed then suddenly transforms into a sailing boat which takes him to an island far away where strange creatures live who romp around all day long. Soon Max is made their chief and enjoys their frolics until eventually it all becomes too much for him and he sends his new playmates to bed without any supper. He begins to feel homesick and decides to leave the island. When he climbs into his boat\, the Wild Things don’t want to let him go\, but Max will not be deterred and returns home. Here his supper is waiting for him and he can overcome his hunger at last. While Oper Dortmund stages the world premiere of the fourth collaboration by “Junge Opern Rhein-Ruhr” with Gerald Resch’s ‘Gulliver’ to a libretto by Jon von Düffel\, which can also be seen at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in the 2017/18 season\, Oliver Knussen’s ‘Wo die wilden Kerle wohnen’ (‘Where The Wild Things Are’)\, a classic family opera from the 20th century will celebrate its premiere at Theater Duisburg. Since the Wild Things first saw the light of day in Maurice Sendak’s illustrated book in 1962\, it’s been impossible to imagine a child’s room without them. Even before Spike Jonze’s film version of the book reached cinemas in 2009\, the story of Max and his animal companions had found its way onto the opera stage. This fantasy opera commissioned by the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels was given its world premiere in a first version in 1980 and was subsequently premiered in London in 1984 in its final version. The British composer Oliver Knussen (*1952) painted the world of the island creatures with an expressive music full of bright tones. The wild things even sing in their own fantasy language which the composer and Maurice Sendak\, who wrote the libretto himself\, created specially for the opera. Young director Philipp Westerbarkei\, who directed Bernstein’s ‘Trouble in Tahiti’ in the 2015/16 season will stage Knussen and Sendak’s loving plea for childish anarchy together with Tatjana Ivschina\, who has designed all the operas for children at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein since 2009.
